About Opossums
The Virginia opossum (Didelphis virginiana) is the sole marsupial native to the United States and Canada โ a living relic whose lineage predates the extinction of non-avian dinosaurs. They carry their young in a pouch, possess more teeth than any other North American land mammal, and have one of the most remarkable immune systems in the animal kingdom.
Despite their scraggly reputation, opossums are docile, deeply beneficial, and profoundly misunderstood. They're nature's pest control โ consuming vast quantities of ticks, venomous snakes, and garden pests โ and they're far less dangerous than most people assume.
