About Opossums

North America's only
native marsupial

The Virginia opossum (Didelphis virginiana) is the sole marsupial native to the United States and Canada โ€” a living relic whose lineage predates the extinction of non-avian dinosaurs. They carry their young in a pouch, possess more teeth than any other North American land mammal, and have one of the most remarkable immune systems in the animal kingdom.

Despite their scraggly reputation, opossums are docile, deeply beneficial, and profoundly misunderstood. They're nature's pest control โ€” consuming vast quantities of ticks, venomous snakes, and garden pests โ€” and they're far less dangerous than most people assume.

Genuinely wild opossum facts

๐Ÿ’Š
Nearly Immune to Rabies
An opossum's naturally low body temperature โ€” around 94โ€“97ยฐF โ€” makes it extremely difficult for the rabies virus to survive and replicate. They're one of the least likely wild animals to carry or transmit rabies, making them safer neighbors than raccoons, bats, or foxes.
๐Ÿ
Immune to Many Snake Venoms
Opossums produce a peptide called LTNF that neutralizes the venom of rattlesnakes, cottonmouths, and copperheads. Researchers are studying it as the basis for a cheap, heat-stable universal snakebite antivenom โ€” potentially saving tens of thousands of lives in developing countries each year.
๐Ÿ˜ต
Playing Dead Is Involuntary
Thanatosis โ€” "playing possum" โ€” is not a conscious choice. It's an involuntary physiological response to extreme stress, similar to fainting. The opossum enters a comatose state, goes limp, and emits a foul odor from its anal glands. It cannot be roused for minutes to hours.
๐ŸฆŸ
Tick-Eating Champions
Studies estimate a single opossum consumes up to 5,000 ticks per season through meticulous self-grooming. Unlike deer or white-footed mice โ€” which are efficient tick hosts โ€” opossums kill nearly every tick that lands on them, making them one of the most effective natural controls for Lyme disease.
๐Ÿ‘ถ
Born the Size of a Honeybee
After just 13 days of gestation, joeys are born tiny and undeveloped. They crawl instinctively through their mother's fur to reach the pouch, attach to a nipple, and continue developing for another two to three months โ€” one of the most dramatic examples of marsupial reproduction in North America.
๐Ÿฆ•
A 70-Million-Year Legacy
The opossum lineage extends back roughly 70 million years. They coexisted with non-avian dinosaurs and survived the mass extinction event. Modern opossums are remarkably similar to their ancient ancestors, making them one of the least evolutionarily changed mammals on Earth.
